From August 2024 to April 2025, I worked as a Communications & Digital Media Intern for the Brampton Steelheads. From training camp to the end of our playoff run, this role gave me an incredible opportunity to foster my media skills, strengthen my confidence, and increase my understanding of the sports media landscape.
Here are some highlights from my internship:
πI constantly used my storytelling skills to develop engaging content for the teamβs websites, from crafting press releases to monthly player highlight articles. I was also tasked with writing post-game articles, which provided a fun challenge of writing under tight deadlines while demonstrating my hockey knowledge and ability to transcribe live sports.
π₯ When I started this position, videography and video editing were areas I aimed to improve on, and I did just that. I generated several short-form and long-form videos throughout the season. From working on our Double Doubles with MacDonell YouTube series to developing numerous TikTok videos, I gained a firmer understanding of the proper execution of video production and editing. I also created several in-game activations for our video board, such as βGet Louds,β and several promotional videos for our merchandise shop, ticket site, and sponsors.
π±Creating engaging graphics was another task I enjoyed doing. I consistently assisted with updating the Weekend Preview and Game Day graphics and created specialized content for themed games. Alongside graphics, I was constantly media monitoring for TikTok ideas or trends and crafting catchy captions for socials. One of my biggest highlights was mastering the art of live tweeting during game days, which required a lot of multitasking while being witty and respecting brand guidelines.
βοΈMore on the communications side, I frequently did administrative work such as managing emails. Whenever we had jersey auctions, I consistently worked behind the scenes to contact the winners, coordinate inquiries such as pick-ups or shipping, and maintain elite customer service and satisfaction. Taking on this role also allowed me to develop additional skills, such as sending invoices, developing the Meta storefront, and understanding e-commerce sites.
